The oldest of five (and the only boy), Louis was interested in music from an early age and starred in lot of school plays in his hometown of Doncaster, England, even playing Danny in a production of Grease. Determined to make it in music, Louis had been uploading vids of himself to YouTube before he went for his “X Factor” audition, where he performed the track “Hey There Delilah”. He was the only member of the band to have a girlfriend during the show, and admits that it was tough. Louis and Hannah dated for 18 months, but eventually broke up. An animal lover, he spent some of his first 1D paycheck on adopting a chimpanzee called Larry. Louis is also the oldest member of 1D, and he’s banned the rest of the members of the band from ever dating any of his sisters!

From Cheshire, England, Harry is a natural performer and was the front man of a band called White Eskimo before auditioning for “X Factor.” Growing up, he loved performing – his first show was when he was just four years old. At the auditions, judges loved his rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely”, but he was heart-broken at Bootcamp, when he was rejected after singing “Stop Crying Your Heart Out”. Of course, the judges had other plans for him, and he was called back, going on to become one member of the fab five that was One Direction. Arguably the biggest heartthrob of the band (we can’t get enough of those curls), Harry admits that he can be quite soppy when it comes to girls, and says his fave film is Love Actually. Aww!

The only member of 1D not from England, Niall hails from Mullingar, Ireland. His aunt noticed his singing skills in the car one day, and Niall was delighted to discover that that is exactly how his idol, Michael Buble, was also discovered. When he took to the stage at the “X Factor” auditions to sing Ne Yo’s “So Sick” the judges compared him to Justin Bieber, but Simon wasn’t impressed, saying he was too young and unprepared. However, his Irish charm shone through, and he made it to Bootcamp and eventually went on to become one fifth of One Direction. He loves playing guitar and was touring his native Ireland, playing small gigs, when he decided to try out for “X Factor”.

The quietest, shyest and most intense member of 1D, Zayn admits that he was a troublesome teen growing up in his hometown of Bratford, England. His ‘tude nearly cost him his spot in One Direction, because even though he impressed the judges with his version of Mario’s Let Me Love You at the auditions, he refused to dance on stage during the Bootcamp part of the show. Simon Cowell had faith in him though, and went backstage to convince him to give it a try. He’s the most likely member of the band to get homesick, and says that he’s constantly on the phone to his mum. Bless! Zayn says he loves smarts in a girl, and was planning to become a Science teacher is he hadn’t become a member of 1D.

As a baby in Wolverhampton, England, docs discovered that one of Liam’s kidneys didn’t work properly, which resulted in lots of hospital visits and injections. As he grew older, fitness became really important to Liam, and he tried everything from running (he’d get up at 6am and run for miles before school!) to boxing (breaking his nose when he was just 12). Music was always his first love though, and he was studying Music Technology in college when he went he auditioned for “X Factor” for the second time. The first time he auditioned was when he was 14, and although he made it all the way to Judge’s Houses, they decided he was too young. His voice has always been a hit with the ladies though – he got his first crush to say yes to a date with him by singing to her! Famed for his Bieber-esque side-swept mop, Liam admits that it used to take him an hour to get it right.
